NYSA-SCYTHOPOLIS / BEISAN (BEIT SHEAN), UMAYYAD AE FALS
Sofaer 74 - see below, 29.3mm, 3.59 grams, edge chip. Struck Circa. 7th Century C.E., Arab Byzantine period
Obverse: Enthroned figures of Justin II and Sophia, holding cruciform scepters
Reverse: Large M; ANNO VIII to sides, NIK in exergue
An EXTREMELY RARE coin and perhaps the ONLY die set for its type. Nicely centered and struck!
This Nysa / Beisan Fals is typically dated ANNO VII. This coin is an unpublished type dated ANNO VIII. There is actually an example of these dies published in the recent Sofaer collection tome. However the authors apparently did not notice the dating variation of this coin and left the VII attribution.
