JOHN (YOCHANAN) HYRCANUS PAIR OF AE PRUTOT

On left: Hendin 6176, VF/EF, 14.8mm, 1.80 grams

Obverse: Inscription within wreath, "Yehohanan the High Priest and the Council of the Judaeans" in Paleo-Hebrew

Reverse: Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons, pomegranate between horns

On right: Hendin 6168, AVF, 14.2mm, 2.04 grams

Obverse: Inscription within wreath, "Yehohanan the High Priest and "Head" of the Council of the Judaeans" in Paleo-Hebrew

Reverse: Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons, pomegranate between horns

TWO very interesting and scarce coins.

On the left is an wonderful and unusual engraving style. Guide to Biblical coins does not have an illustration for this exact Hendin number, but there is a line drawing. The line drawing may have been taken from this die as they are virtualy identical!

Ex: VJM Collection, NJ  Purchased from David Hendin (Amphora) 1975

On the right is a scarce early "Rosh" version of the John Hyrcanus Prutah where he proclaims himself the "Head" with a nice clear inscription.
