VESPASIAN AR DENARIUS, JUDAEA CAPTA

Hendin 6510, RIC 4, RSC 229, Fine, light scrapes, 18.2mm, 2.99 grams, Struck Circa. Dec. 69 C.E. - early 70 C.E.

Obverse: IMP CAESAR VESAPASIAN AVG around laureate head of Vespasian to right

Reverse: Palm tree at left; to right, Judaea, veiled and draped, seated to right on the ground, hands bound behind back, in attitude of mourning

A RARE early Judaea Capta Denarius with a palm tree behind the weeping Jewess instead of the usual trophy of arms! Interestingly at this time at the beginning of the rule of Vespasian, some denarii such as this still have a somewhat Vitellius-like portrait.
