NERO AE AS, 66 C.E.
RIC 543, RSC 302, Near Extremely Fine, 28.8mm, 10.99 grams, Lugdunum (Lyon) Mint
Obverse: IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P around bare head to right, small globe at point of bust
Reverse: Victory advancing left, holding a shield inscribed S P Q R, S C across fields
Nice style and EXCELLENT detail, even in the face of Victory on the reverse!
The "S" of a rare S P Q R countermark, which was almost always placed horizontally on the neck, is present on this coin. It was applied in Gallia Lugdunensis, by the administration of Julius Vindex, during his revolt, or that of Galba in 68 C.E.AD 68.
