ANTIOCHUS VII EURGETES "HELMET" AE, JERUSALEM

Hendin 6166, SNG Spaer 2095, VF, 12.6mm, 1.48 grams, Jerusalem Mint

Obverse: Crested helmet with cheek pieces to right, border of dots

Reverse: King Antiochos, to sides of aphlaston

Fantastic helmet and a lovely natural patina on this scarce and interesting type, recently attributed by Dr. Donald Ariel to Jerusalem! This coin was the probably prototype for the extremely rare coin (Hendin 1136) struck by John Hyrcanus as client ruler of Antiochos VII.

Very recently a similar example fetched over $200 see here and a centered on both sides example $840 ! see here.
